Author John Bates kicks off
Nicolet College Library Writers Series Aug. 18 in Minocqua

Northwoods author and naturalist John Bates will kick off the Nicolet College Library 2009-10 Writers Series with a free presentation at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Nicolet's Lakeland Campus.

Bates will present Honoring Our Place in the Natural World: Readings on Seasons of the North. He'll read passages from his favorite works and discus the nature writing genre.

"Our understanding of the outer landscape helps guide and form our inner landscape," writes Bates. "The Northwoods, blessed with the theater of four seasons, offers a riot of diverse life open to our experience if we only slow down, pay attention, and let ourselves fall head over heels in love."

Bates has authored seven books and contributed to several others that explore various aspects of nature. Books he's written include Graced by the Seasons, River Life: The Natural and Cultural History of a Northern River, and A Seasonal Guide to the Natural Year.

Refreshments will be served at this free event. Nicolet's Lakeland Campus is located in Minocqua on Hwy. 70 just west of the Hwy. 51 intersection and adjacent to the Lakeland Union High School.
