Nicolet College - Smart house technology training to start this fall

Smart house technology training
to start this fall at Nicolet College

Training in smart-home technology will start at Nicolet College this fall with the launch of the new Home Technology Integration Certificate.

This emerging field combines a number of different technologies into a single computer-based network that controls such things as home security, heating, cooling, appliances, and telecommunications.

"There's a growing trend for homes to have this new level of technology," said Rick Foral, Nicolet College dean of instruction. "Graduates from the program will have the skills necessary to add these features to a home, giving the homeowner the ability to monitor and control a wide variety of functions from across town, across the country or across the world."

Graduates of the year-long certificate program will have the skills to install:
- internet and computer network systems;
- security systems that include video surveillance and home access controls;
- heating, cooling, water and electricity control systems;
- video and audio signal reception and distribution systems;
- appliance automation and control equipment;
- telecommunications equipment.

When combined, the above features and functions improve energy efficiency and overall comfort in a home by making smarter use of utilities and managing appliance energy consumption.

The Home Technology Integration Program is open to anyone and designed specifically to increase the skill sets of electricians, HVAC installers, home builders, computer professionals, or anyone looking to start a career in this growing field.

Along with earning a college certificate, graduates will also be prepared to take the industry-specific certification exam, the CEA-Comp TIA DHTI+.

All of the classes for the 10-credit certificate will be held in the evenings and on Saturdays to allow people with day-time jobs to complete the certificate. Fall Semester classes start Aug. 24.
