Nicolet College - Nicolet Players Sylvia auditions Sept. 15, 16

Auditions for Nicolet Players’ Sylvia Sept. 14, 15

The Nicolet Players will hold auditions for their upcoming production of Sylvia on Monday and Tuesday, Sept., 14 and 15, at 7 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theatre.

Playwright A.R. Gurney is famous for his plays that explore the eccentricities of family life. Sylvia tells the story of Greg and Kate who have moved from the suburbs into Manhattan. Kate’s new teaching career is flourishing; Greg’s financial career is in a nosedive.

Then one day Greg brings home a stray dog, Sylvia – part lab, part poodle – and Kate, done with dogs, is not amused. The biggest twist is that Sylvia is played by a woman, but she’s convincingly all dog: eager to please, mystified by human behavior.

Add three other eccentric characters who include the macho owner of another dog named Bowser, a gossipy office worker, and a nosy therapist, and you have the makings for a charming comedy.

There are roles for one to two men and three to five women. Ages range from 20's to 60's. Sylvia walks and speaks like a human, but also behaves like a dog, making it a physically challenging role. Auditions are open to everyone and no preparation is necessary.

Performances will be in the Nicolet College Theatre the first two weekends of November. Scripts (and more audition details) are available for a three-day checkout from the Nicolet Library.

Both the library and the theatre are located in the Learning Resources Center on the Rhinelander campus. If you have questions about the play or the audition process, call Nicolet's theatre director Jim Nuttall at (715) 365-4476, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4476.
