Meier begins work on Nicolet campus

Students at Nicolet College will have greater access to service learning opportunities thanks to the new AmeriCorps/VISTA coordinator working out of the Rhinelander campus.
Chris Meier began work this fall in the new Nicolet College Center for Community Engagement which is designed to connect Nicolet students with area community groups for service learning projects.
"My focus now is learning about the needs of the many different community groups in the Northwoods and then matching these needs with service learning projects for Nicolet students," Meier said.
Many courses at Nicolet have service learning requirements where students engage in meaningful civic projects that present students with significant learning opportunities.
"The students benefit by learning new skills and expanding their knowledge about a given subject, the community groups benefit by getting assistance with projects, and our communities benefit as a whole from the work completed by these partnerships," Meier explained.
He went on to add that only certain projects qualify, with the key component being that the project must offer the opportunity for student learning. "That's the main difference between service learning and community service," he said.
Meier's position is funded through the AmeriCorps VISTA/Wisconsin Campus Compact.
Prior to beginning his coordinator position, Meier was a junior high and high school English teacher for 24 years, including 16 years in the Phelps School District.
