Nicolet Players Rocket Man auditions Sept. 12, 13
Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011
With auditions coming up for the Nicolet Players’ production of Rocket Man, one long-time troupe member has a few words of advice for anyone who has always wanted to be a part of community theater but has yet to take the leap.
“Just do it! You’ll have the time of your life!”
That’s according to Mike Hubbard, an enthusiastic veteran of a dozen Nicolet Players productions. “It’s a very rewarding experience,” Hubbard went on to explain. “You’ll meet a lot of great people and will be amazed how much you will learn about theater. I can’t say enough about the experience. It is really a lot of fun.”
Auditions for Rocket Man are scheduled for 7 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 12 and 13, in the Nicolet College Theatre.
Rocket Man tells the story of Donny Rowan, who has placed everything he owns on his front lawn, along with a sign that reads: "Here's my life. Make an offer." He has cut a skylight into his attic and placed his E-Z Boy recliner underneath where he can sit, staring at the stars. Somewhere in the universe, Donny believes, is a place where all the roads we never chose converge.
The serious comedy written by Steven Dietz, one of America's most prolific and widely-produced contemporary playwrights, explores one man's obsessive desire to find this "parallel world" and the profound effect of his decision on his family and friends.
There are roles for two men and two women in ages ranging from their 30s to 50s and another role for a teenage daughter 16 to 18 years old.
As for any nervousness anyone might have about auditioning, Hubbard said: “Forget about it. Nicolet Theatre director Jim Nuttall is very patient and welcoming to everyone who auditions. He really knows how to make auditions fun.” Auditions are open to everyone. No previous acting experience is required.
Public performances of Rocket Man will run Nov. 4 to 6 and again Nov. 10 to 13.
Scripts are available for three-day checkout from the Nicolet Library on the Rhinelander Campus. If you have questions about the play or the audition process, call Jim Nuttall at (715) 365-4476, 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4476, or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Nicolet Theatre is located in the Learning Resources Center on the Rhinelander campus, one mile south of the city just off of Hwy. G.
