Anyone serving on a non-profit board or is interested in doing so in the future is invited to attend a three-session training program designed to help individuals become effective board members.
The Non-Profit Board Member Training Series will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on three consecutive Tuesdays, April 10, 17 and 24, in Northwoods Center Rooms 207 and 208 at Nicolet College.
The sessions will cover numerous topics that include:
- responsibilities, requirements and duties of board members.
- characteristics of a highly functioning board.
- strategic planning.
- establishing goals and strategies to reach the organization's mission.
- financial requirements and obligations of board members.
- relationship between board members and staff.
The series will be facilitated by Kelly Fischer. In addition to leading non-profit organizations, Fischer has built a successful marketing, communications, and graphic design firm. As the owner of KFischer Consulting, she provides leadership, governance, and development advice to help non-profits become more effective.
Panelists will include Jim Brown, president of the Grow North Regional Economic Development Corporation; Howard Hutchinson, vice president of the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing; Corky McReynolds, director of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Treehaven Field Station; and Cheri Wilson, vice president of the Co-Vantage Credit Union in Crandon.

The series is being presented by the Nicolet College Workforce and Economic Development Department and the United Way. Collaborative partners are the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce, UW-Extension, and the School District of Rhinelander.
